Sunday, August 7, 2016

After a great weekend where the collection was presented at Kiki Niesten Maastricht and at Fashionclash 2016 there was a little “get-together” with the press organised by Forza Fashion House at Thiessen Wijnkoopers. A bit shaken from the after party the night before, that didn’t stop me from having some great conversations with Gijs Stork, fellow designer Verena Klein and Guisy de Ceglia. What a wonderful setting and how nice to be able to talk about the collection and get feedback face to face. Pictures taken by Karen Kikkert.

‘Carnaval’ is one of the oldest of these traditions. The ritual that culminates in the days of the carnaval festival is built from a wide variety of events: Gatherings of people, in large or small numbers, even when ‘Vastelaovend’ (the Limburgian name for Carnaval) is still just a date on the calendar we look forward to. Creating costumes, building a float, playing music, having food and drinks. We do all of these things together, as a group.

The theme of the Maastrichtian Vastelaovend is to connect, through ‘Plezeer & Sjariteit’, through fun and charity.

‘Common Carnaval’ is a project by, for and with citizens of Maastricht, those born to the city as well as refugees and newcomers.

The refugees haven’t just left their city, village or home. When they fled they had to leave the belongings, the moments, and the locations that shaped their every day life behind. They also left their shared rituals: the celebrations they shared with family, friends, neighborhoods, cities or even an entire country.

This article was written after the kick off of a project I was invited to work on. The project is about the mine workers in Limburg. It is a 100 years ago the mines opened in Limburg. It has been a great influence on the culture, landscape and community of the region. I was asked to make a couture piece that reflects on the Polish mine workers. After I made a commercial translation that was made by 100% Heerlen, a workshop for young women. The commercial piece has the same influences as the couture piece, but is it more wearable. It is a dress made of cotton with elements of the blouses the mine workers would wear. This pieces is made 10 times and are sold in the “Mineshop” in Heerlen for the entire year.

Behind the scenes at the photo-shoot of the MIJN collection for Chapeau magazine with amazing photographer Romy Finke. The models are the same girls working on the clothes themselves. Hair and make up by Indy Klimczak. This project ran all through 2015 which was set up because 2015 was the year of the coalmines in Limburg, the Netherlands. I was asked as a designer to design an outfit based on this rich history of the region. The pret-a-porter version of my design was produced by 100% Heerlen. A place where young woman can sew and work.
